Representatives of European countries have more chances to lead the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but an opportunity will be also given to candidates from developing economies, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Arkady Dvorkovich. “For sure, there are chances,” Dvorkovich said in the sidelines of a legal forum in Saint-Petersburg answering the question whether representatives of developing countries have chances to lead the IMF. He also said that “based on the current ratio of influence and votes in the Fund (IMF), European countries have more chances.” “Other options are also possible as a compromise,” Dvorkovich added. The International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned after being accused of sexually assaulting a maid in New York hotel. Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov suggested Gregory Marchenko as a candidate to head the IMF at the Summit of the CIS (Commonwealth of independent States) Heads of Government in Minsk. The Council supported his candidacy. The candidates are expected to be put forth during May 21 - June 8, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing Russian Minister of Finance Andrei Bokaryov. According to Bokaryov, the list is being generated with the account of all possible candidates, but it is quite possible that “some of them will withdraw at the initial stage, others may be able to claim this position for some reasons, and the list will be short in the end.” Bokaryov said that taking into account the discussion on May 19 in Minsk, it is evident that the Chairman of Kazakhstan National Bank Gregory Marchenko will be on a list of possible candidates. However, he said that “it is too early to speak about chances and point out the countries that are likely to support such candidate.”
