Tengrinews.kz - Mazhilis deputy Sergey Ponomarev has called for urgent action to address Almaty’s environmental problems, describing the situation as an ecological disaster.
"I want to once again draw attention to the environmental catastrophe in Almaty. The air in our beloved city is so bad that residents are practically vacuuming it to raise awareness of the crisis," Ponomarev said during a plenary session of the Mazhilis.
The deputy believes the solution lies in expanding the use of electric vehicles.
"I believe the city can solve this problem with electric cars. Government agencies and the quasi-public sector should switch to them. The Almaty akimat (local government administration) must increase the share of public transport with electric engines. All taxis and car-sharing services should be fully transitioned to electric power," he concluded.
Previously, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov identified vehicles as the primary factor contributing to Almaty’s environmental issues.
