Almaty administration is planning to buy trolleys for $36 million by the end of 2011, Deputy Akim (Mayor) of Almaty Murat Kudyshev told at the press-conference on Centr Tyazhesti forum. “A tender for suppliers of trolley buses will be held in July 2011. Any producers, including foreign ones, can take part in the tender. We are planning that the first lot of new cars will arrive to Almaty by the end of this year,” he said and added that this project is financed by the European Bank of Recondstuction and Development (EBRD). As for new trams, Kudyshev said that currently the main problem is tram ways. 85 percent of them are worn out. “That is why it is important to modify tram ways first,” he said. Deputy Akim also noted that the cost of one tram car varies from 500 thousand to 2 million Euro. “Department of Passenger Transport and Roads has developed plans for reconstruction of the first stage of tram ways. We are currently looking for investors, as this project is very expensive. Considering all that, the focus is made on development of trolley buses, as their cost is much lower,” he said.
