Almaty prepares for abnormal heat: what will change in the city

Starting Thursday, 16 convoys of specialized equipment will operate on main streets and areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, watering the roadway while spraying water into the air, known as aeration. The work will be carried out during the hottest hours of the day and will cover more than 128 streets in the city.

“At the same time, daily cleaning and maintenance of the street and road network continues. More than 500 units of specialized equipment are already being used to wash roads, sidewalks, bus stop shelters and other urban infrastructure facilities,” the press service said.

It is noted that aeration and watering will help lower the air temperature near the road surface, improve dust suppression, reduce asphalt heating and thereby ease the thermal load on the road surface during extreme heat.

According to Kazhydromet, abnormally hot weather is expected in Almaty from July 16 to 20. Air temperatures in some areas will reach +42°C, exceeding +40°C for the first time this season and rising significantly above the climatic norm.
