Tengrinews.kz — U.S. President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, shared his impressions of his visit to Kazakhstan, calling the trip “exceptionally successful.” He made this statement at a reception honoring the region’s foreign ministers in Washington, citing the U.S. State Department.

“Just last week, Deputy Secretary Landau and I had the great privilege of visiting Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. It was a hugely successful visit. Central Asian hospitality is truly unmatched. Chris and I, I think, will be losing weight for the next few months – the amount of food that we ate. But from the warm welcome, delicious meals, incredible history and culture, my first visit to the region as the President’s special envoy was one to be remembered,” Gor said.

“Remarkable progress”

According to Sergio Gor, he witnessed “remarkable progress” in Kazakhstan in the fields of innovation, education, and business. He noted that partners in the region are eager to cooperate with American companies that “bring high standards, transparency, and real benefits for their people.”

Trump is focusing on Central Asia

He emphasized that Donald Trump attaches special importance to Central Asia.

“When the President appointed me to be the special envoy for Central Asia, one thing that he emphasized to me is that, in previous administrations, this area of the world did not get the attention that it deserves. And his commitment to this region is that you have a direct line to the White House and that you will get the attention that this area very much so deserves,” Sergio Gor added.

Rubio: “This is the beginning of a new era in relations”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the visit of Gor and Landau to Kazakhstan an “important mission.”

“They spent a substantial amount of time, and I know they look forward to going back to the other countries they were not able to visit. I personally intend to visit in the coming year as well, and I – all five, so I know it’d probably be a week-long or longer trip, so we’ve got to work on that and make that happen together,” Rubio said.

According to him, Trump has made it clear that he wants U.S. foreign policy to be based on national interests.

“Our national interests are aligned, and I think tonight’s reception, tomorrow’s meeting, and some of the things we’re going to do together in the months and weeks and – to come are going to further strengthen that. So it’s an honor to welcome you all here to the State Department. It’ll be an honor to welcome your presidents. I know the President’s excited about tomorrow’s gathering as well, and I think it’s an exciting opportunity and a new era in our relationship in Central Asia,” he added.

Tokayev's visit to Washington

Earlier, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in Washington. The head of state will hold talks with Trump and participate in the “Central Asia – U.S.” summit.

Background

The C5+1 format (the five Central Asian states + the U.S.) is a dialogue platform launched in 2015, focused on economic partnership, security, ecology, and development — without a geopolitical agenda. Summits take place every 1–2 years, alternating between leaders’ and ministers’ meetings.

Previously, U.S. Special Envoy Sergio Gor and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau visited Kazakhstan. They traveled to Almaty and later met with the Kazakh President in Astana.

During the meeting, the sides discussed prospects for expanding the Kazakh–American strategic partnership ahead of the upcoming C5+1 summit in Washington.

The President of Kazakhstan expressed confidence that the high-level meeting would be productive in defining key priorities for long-term cooperation. Kazakhstan aims to give a strong boost to trade, economic, and investment partnerships with the United States.
