Tengrinews.kz — At a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC), President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that customs regulation and state control measures should not be used as a tool to push through certain decisions within the Union, citing Akorda press service.

The head of state stressed that the time has come to completely eradicate the practice of creating administrative barriers in mutual trade.

“We need to remove artificial restrictions on the movement of citizens and eliminate multi-kilometer queues of trucks at borders. Customs and control measures must not be used as a means of internal pressure within the EAEU. Despite the documents adopted on barrier-free trade, it is important to strictly comply with obligations and eliminate ‘bottlenecks’ in a timely manner. To quickly identify potential barriers, the Commission should connect AI to monitoring legislative initiatives in EAEU countries. The Union’s priorities are a single barrier-free market and free transit so that citizens and businesses feel the real benefits of integration,” the head of state said.

In Tokayev’s view, the geography of trade and economic cooperation should be actively expanded.

“This year, a Free Trade Agreement with Mongolia and an Economic Partnership Agreement with the United Arab Emirates were signed. Today, a similar agreement will be signed with Indonesia. We welcome this. This is an important result of our joint work and evidence of growing interest from third countries in deepening trade ties with the Eurasian Economic Union. In the foreseeable future, we believe it is important to expand the Union’s engagement with the countries of the Global South, the Arab world, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Special attention should be paid to cooperation with such important groupings as the SCO, ASEAN, and others,” the President added.

Earlier in his remarks, Tokayev said that the combined GDP of EAEU countries is expected to grow by 2 percent in 2025. According to forecasts, GDP growth will become sustainable over the next two years.
