Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan’s aging index has increased by 1.6 percentage points over the past year, according to data from the Bureau of National Statistics.

In 2024, the aging index reached 31.1, up from 29.5 in 2023. This means there are 31.1 people aged 65 and over for every 100 children aged 0 to 15 in the country.

Regionally, the highest aging index was recorded in the North Kazakhstan region at 78.1, followed by the East Kazakhstan region(76) and the Kostanay region (66.4).

The lowest index was observed in the Mangystau region, where there are 15.2 elderly people per 100 children. Other regions with low values include the Turkestan Region (15.9) and the city of Shymkent (16.1).

The aging index is higher in urban areas than in rural ones – 33.4 compared to 27.5, respectively.

The aging index is a demographic indicator that shows how many elderly people (aged 65 and over) there are per 100 children (aged 0 to 14). A higher index reflects a growing proportion of elderly citizens in the population.

Previously, the Bureau of National Statistics announced the population of Kazakhstan as of March 1, 2025.
