Tengrinews.kz — A court sentenced two local residents and a man from Shymkent to prison terms for selling radioactive uranium in Aktobe, citing Diapazon.
According to the criminal case materials, a citizen of Uzbekistan illegally acquired depleted uranium weighing 958.7 grams. He then told his friend Rudolf, who lives in Shymkent, that he had an opportunity to sell the radioactive substance. Rudolf, in turn, informed his acquaintances in Aktobe, Kunysbay and Erkin, who began looking within their circles for potential buyers.
In September, the Uzbek citizen handed the depleted uranium to Rudolf, who then passed it to Erkin and Kunysbay. They transported it to Aktobe from Shymkent in the trunk of a Chevrolet Tracker.
The National Security Committee (NSC) learned about the scheme and introduced an undercover buyer into the case, providing him with dummy cash totaling a little over $500,000. The “buyer” met with the sellers in a forest belt outside the city.
As a result of the NSC special operation, the man from Shymkent and the two residents of Aktobe were detained. The seized substance was sent for examination, which confirmed that it was made of radioactive material and was depleted uranium. All three defendants pleaded guilty in court.
The court sentenced the two Aktobe residents to two years in prison for selling uranium. Their accomplice from Shymkent received six months more, as he had a prior conviction. Under the court ruling, the uranium will be destroyed.
