Launch date for Almaty LRT announced 24.kz

Tengrinews.kz — Almaty’s LRT is scheduled to launch at the end of 2027. This was reported by the city’s Road Transport Infrastructure Development. Preparatory work is currently underway, citing 24KZ.

Specialists have already dismantled the old tram rails and asphalt pavement. After that, they plan to build the foundations for the new type of urban transport.

The first LRT line will connect the industrial zone in the Alatau district with the central part of the metropolis and the Almaty-2 railway station. The route will be 18 kilometers long and will include 34 stops. One train will be able to accommodate up to 285 people, while the average speed will not exceed 35 kilometers per hour.

Unlike in Astana, Almaty’s light rail transport will be mostly ground-level and will run along streets without the construction of multi-meter overpasses. Another feature will be the absence of overhead power lines.

“As part of the LRT construction, modern solutions are being considered to avoid installing overhead power lines for the rolling stock. In particular, the rolling stock would operate on its own batteries, with charging at stations. Such solutions are now being considered in order to avoid overhead lines — in other words, to keep the sky clear,” said Asan Bostanov, deputy head of Almaty’s Road Transport Infrastructure Development.
