Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan has significantly improved its position in the independent anti-money laundering rating, leaving 110 countries behind, according to the Financial Monitoring Agency.

The Basel Institute on Governance has published its annual Basel AML Index. According to the document of the most authoritative source in the field of combating money laundering and terrorist financing, Kazakhstan is in 111th place with 4.65 points. It is noted that the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing is assessed on a 10-point scale (where 10 is the highest risk, 0 is the lowest risk).

"Kazakhstan has surpassed such countries as the United States, Japan, Singapore, China, Qatar, Italy, Hungary and Turkey. The top 5 countries with the lowest risk include San Marino, Iceland, Finland, Estonia, Andorra, Sweden," the report says.

In 2024, the index (as part of the public version) assessed 164 countries and was based on 17 indicators in 5 areas measuring various factors that contribute to high risks of money laundering and terrorist financing. The rating methodology has been amended to reflect the growing risks of fraud as a predicate offence related to money laundering.
