Tengrinews.kz - Over 100 dead seals have been discovered along the Caspian Sea coast in the Tupkaragan district by the Zhaiyk-Caspian Interregional Basin Fisheries Inspectorate.

"Inspection representatives, local authorities, specialists from the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology, and members of the Association of Fisheries and Aquaculture "Qazaq balyk" were dispatched to the site. The cause of the seals' death will be determined after laboratory tests are completed," said the press service of the Fisheries Committee at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The agency confirmed that monitoring of the Caspian Sea shoreline is ongoing.

Social activist Azamat Sarsenbayev posted on Facebook that, following recent storms, hundreds of carcasses of endangered seals were found washed ashore.

"Currently, scientists have counted only 151 seal carcasses. According to researchers studying the seals in this area, some carcasses show signs of physical damage. The exact cause of the mass death remains unknown," he wrote.

Earlier, three adult seal carcasses were found along a beach in Fort-Shevchenko on the Caspian Sea coast.

Two years ago, over 100 dead seals were found along the Caspian coast in the Mangystau Region in early November, with the Caspian Seal Research and Rehabilitation Center staff sent to the site.

This spring, nearly 80 dead seals were also discovered along the Caspian coast, prompting fishery inspectors in Mangystau Region to investigate.

The akimat (the local government administration) of Aktau has begun preparations for the reconstruction project of the Caspian Sea embankment.
