Tengrinews.kz – Residents of Aktobe are concerned about an illness accompanied by high fever and cough, Diapazon reports.
“Many people around me are sick, especially children — they have it the hardest. Their temperature rises above 38, there’s coughing, weakness. In our kindergarten group, about half of the children didn’t come on Monday — they got sick. Adults are coughing too. I read that this could be some new virus — the Hong Kong flu. Do we really have it? Is it true that many people are being admitted to the infectious diseases hospital with it?” Albina wrote.
The Department of Sanitary and Epidemiological Control confirmed that there are cases of the Hong Kong virus in the city. However, this strain cannot be called new.
“At the moment, cases of influenza type A (H3N2), the so-called ‘Hong Kong’ virus, have been detected and laboratory confirmed in the region. This is a seasonal subtype that circulates every year during the autumn–winter period. It is not new and belongs to long-known strains of seasonal flu,” said Raikhan Koishanova, head of the Aktobe Region Department of Sanitary and Epidemiological Control.
The regional healthcare department reported that five patients are hospitalized daily in the infectious disease unit. The hospital’s emergency department receives about 20 patients a day.
“The hospital is treating not only patients with acute respiratory infections (ARVI), but also those with intestinal infections, meningitis, scarlet fever, and chickenpox. Out of 135 beds in the regional clinical infectious disease hospital, 14 patients are being treated for ARVI, including 11 children. As of November 12, a total of 14 patients have been hospitalized today, 11 of them children. Laboratory tests confirmed 11 cases of the H3N2 strain (‘Hong Kong virus’),” the regional healthcare department reported.
