Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan’s Minister of Healthcare Akmaral Alnazarova reported on the epidemiological situation regarding ARVI and influenza, including the circulation of the Hong Kong flu strain.

According to the minister, since the beginning of the epidemiological season — from September 1, 2025 — 1,461,819 cases of ARVI have been registered in the country, which is 20 percent lower than during the same period last season (1,678,904 cases).

Among those infected, 963,847 are children under 14, accounting for nearly 66 percent of all cases.

“However, over the last week, there has been an increase: 183,074 ARVI cases were registered — 16 percent more than during the same period last season. Since the beginning of the season, 590 cases of influenza have been confirmed, of which 587 are type A H3N2, known as Hong Kong flu. This virus has been circulating in Kazakhstan since 2001. A few isolated cases of type A H1N1 were also detected,” the minister said.

Circulation of influenza this season began in the first half of October — slightly earlier than last year. No new influenza types previously unseen in the country have been detected.

Patients are also being tested for non-influenza viruses. The following viruses continue to circulate in Kazakhstan:

  • Rhinovirus;
  • Parainfluenza;
  • Adenovirus;
  • Bocavirus;
  • Coronaviruses;
  • RSV (respiratory syncytial virus);
  • Metapneumovirus.

Alnazarova added that children aged 0–14 make up 66 percent of all ARVI cases, while adults account for 34 percent.

Over the past week, more than 6,000 cases of ARVI and 13 cases of influenza have been registered among schoolchildren. Approximately 4 percent of all infected individuals are school-aged children.

Context

Reports previously stated that due to rising illness rates, some schools in the capital had introduced mask requirements, and individual classes were temporarily moved to online learning. However, the Astana Education Department denied this, stating that no mask mandate had been introduced, though mass events are temporarily prohibited.

Earlier, we reported that residents of the capital were complaining about a “new virus” — with fevers lasting for weeks and difficulty getting a doctor’s appointment.

Later, the Ministry of Healthcare clarified which viruses are currently active in the country and what Kazakhstanis should expect in the coming months.

On November 12, the country’s Chief Sanitary Doctor, Sarhat Beisenova, reported on current influenza and ARVI levels in schools, as well as the conditions under which educational institutions might switch to distance learning.
