Tengrinews.kz – Legendary Kazakh boxer Gennady Golovkin has been elected president of the international federation World Boxing, reports a Tengrinews.kz correspondent from Rome, where the organization’s congress took place today, November 23.
Golovkin was the only candidate approved for the election. All contenders underwent screening by an independent verification commission consisting of three external experts. The process was also overseen by the international sports arbitration organization Sport Resolutions.
Since Golovkin was the sole candidate, his appointment was unanimously approved by the Congress without a vote, in accordance with the World Boxing charter.
What is World Boxing
World Boxing is an international sports organization established in 2023 after the International Olympic Committee revoked recognition of the IBA (formerly AIBA) due to multiple issues, including lack of financial transparency and corruption.
World Boxing now oversees amateur boxing, including Olympic boxing. In September 2024, Golovkin became chairman of the organization’s Olympic Commission, making significant efforts to ensure recognition by many national federations and to keep boxing in the sports program of the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Golovkin has replaced Dutch sports official Boris van der Vorst as president of World Boxing.

Golovkin’s achievements
Gennady Golovkin is an honored master of sports of Kazakhstan, the 2003 world champion, and the silver medalist of the 2004 Olympic Games. In his professional career, he became a global star, fighting 45 bouts and winning 42, including 37 by knockout; he also has two losses and one draw. Golovkin held the WBC, IBF, IBO, and WBA middleweight titles, set a streak of 23 consecutive knockouts, and was included in the Guinness World Records for the highest knockout percentage in middleweight history. In addition, GGG surpassed Bernard Hopkins’ record for title defenses and was nominated this year to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Since February 2024, Golovkin has served as president of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan.
The election of the legendary boxer Gennady Golovkin as president of World Boxing marks yet another historic achievement — until now, no representative of Kazakhstan had ever headed an international federation in any sport.
