Tengrinews.kz - Alongside the seals, cormorants are also dying, entangled in fishing nets set illegally to catch sturgeon, according to Atyrau Online.

The fishery inspection department of the Mangystau region has stated that poachers are responsible for the birds’ deaths.

"It’s migration season for the birds, and cormorants dive for fish in the water, where they get caught in these illegal nets. They become entangled and some die. We managed to rescue two cormorants, but three others perished. These nets were likely left by local fishermen engaging in illegal fishing near their village," said regional fish inspector Andrey Rutskiy.

The cormorants were found in the Tupkaragan district, about 500 meters from a shipping channel. According to Rutskiy, poaching activities on the Caspian not only harm birds but also seals.

"There has been a significant increase in seal strandings recently. While we can’t definitively attribute all of this to poachers, there is some supporting evidence. For example, according to spring reports from the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology, around four percent of the 187 seal carcasses examined showed signs of mechanical injury," he added.

Earlier, an expert posted about the likely causes of the recent mass seal deaths on the Caspian, describing the sudden and unusual nature of the mortality among marine animals.
