What the weather was like in May 2026
According to forecasters, dry and abnormally warm weather prevailed across most of the country at the beginning and end of the month. However, in mid-May, night frosts of -1°C to -7°C were recorded in the north, east and center.
Weather in Astana in May
In Astana, the average air temperature in May was 17.1°C, which is 2.6°C above the climate norm. For comparison, the monthly average norm is 14.5°C.
The highest air temperature in the capital was recorded on May 31 and reached 33.8°C. The lowest temperature was recorded on the night of May 12 — 1.3°C.
Over the month, Astana received 18 millimeters of precipitation, below the monthly norm of 33 millimeters.
Records
Temperature records were recorded in several regions at once.
On May 1, the air temperature in Pavlodar warmed up to 29.4°C. The previous maximum for this day was 29°C and was set in 2022.
On May 6 and 7, temperatures of 33.1°C and 33.8°C, respectively, were recorded in Zhezkazgan. These figures exceeded the records of 2014 and 2001, when temperatures rose to 31.3°C and 31°C.
On May 7, the temperature in Kyzylorda reached 36.7°C, above the previous record of 35°C set in 2001.
On the same day, the air in Taraz warmed up to 32.1°C, exceeding the 2015 maximum of 31.4°C. On May 9, the temperature in the city reached 31.8°C, breaking the 2024 record of 31.3°C.
On May 31, thermometers in Petropavlovsk rose to 35°C. This broke the record set in 1943, when the temperature reached 33.6°C.
In Karaganda, the temperature on May 31 was 33.7°C, exceeding the 1952 maximum of 33°C.
