A young man from Kazakhstan was shot near his friend’s apartment at 454 Green St., Portsmouth, Virginia. The young man’s friends identified him as Kirill Suchin, a cook from the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel, Patrick Wilson from The Virginian-Pilot writes. Police says that Portsmouth Police Officers were dispatched over a report of burglary a little after 10 p.m. There they saw a man banging on the door. People living in the building where the man was shot confirmed that he often stayed overnight with one of the inhabitants. Maurice Wilson, also a cook, lives with his wife in the building where the young man was killed. “He is not a burglar. He is a friend,” Maurice Wilson said. The reason the police gave to justify the shooting of the unarmed young man was: “The suspect then made furtive movements with his hands, at the same time, lunging towards the Officer. The Officer fired his service weapon.” According to the police the exact number of times the Officer fired his weapon is not known. However one of the witnesses Aileen Putnam who lives around the corner heard six gunshots. The department refuses to identify the name of the officer, but confirms that investigation is in process. The Officer is on administrative leave. “As in any officer involved shooting, the Department is continuing to conduct two simultaneous investigations. The Homicide Unit is conducting a criminal investigation, which at its conclusion will be presented to the Commonwealth’s Attorney. The Professional Standards Unit is conducting an administrative investigation, which will focus on matters such as policy and training,” the police department’s press-release reads. The young man had a lot of friends, everyone in the neighborhood knew and liked him. Both friends and co-workers speak highly of him. He was happy with his job and never showed temper or hurt anyone. He is said to have been sending money home to his brother in Kazakhstan who was planning to come over to the US. A memorial has been set up on Green St. by his friends.
