Tengrinews.kz – 12 people were convicted of terrorism and extremism in Kazakhstan last month, according to the press service of the National Security Committee (NSC).
As reported by the NSC, 11 individuals were convicted for promoting terrorist ideologies, justifying violence, and inciting religious hatred, while one person had planned to travel abroad to join a terrorist organization.
“All of them were found guilty by court decision and sentenced to various prison terms. Work in this area is ongoing,” the statement said.
How terrorism and extremism are punished in Kazakhstan
According to Article 255 of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan – “Act of Terrorism” – committing explosions, arson, or other actions that endanger lives, cause significant property damage, or lead to other serious consequences is punishable by 6 to 20 years of imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense.
The Criminal Code does not have a separate article specifically for extremism, but Article 405 covers “Organization and participation in the activities of public or religious associations or other organizations after a court decision banning or dissolving them due to extremist or terrorist activities.”
Penalties under Article 405 include:
- A fine of up to 2,000 Monthly Calculation Indices (MCI) (equivalent to 7.8 million tenge in 2025);
- Imprisonment or restriction of freedom for up to 2 years;
- For more severe offenses: a fine up to 6,000 MCI (about 23.5 million tenge in 2025) or imprisonment/restriction of freedom for up to 6 years.
For creating or leading a terrorist group or participating in its activities (Article 257), the punishment is 10 to 17 years in prison.
For financing terrorist or extremist activities (Article 258), the sentence ranges from 5 to 12 years, depending on the gravity of the crime.
