Tengrinews.kz - Microsoft is preparing to close Skype. Information about this was found in a new test version of the once popular messenger.

The developers of the XDA Developers resource discovered that a line appeared in the new preview version of Skype for Windows with information that Microsoft will close the popular messenger service in May of this year with a complete transfer of clients to Teams.

The hidden line in the code of the new test version reads: "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue calling and chatting in Teams". No other details were reported.

Microsoft ended support for the classic version of Skype back in November 2018. However, in the summer of 2024, the company decided to return the messenger to the Windows 11 operating system, while removing ads and significantly increasing the performance of the application.

Skype was launched in 2003 and at one time gained huge popularity as a messaging platform. In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion and tried to integrate it into various products, including Windows, Windows Phone, and even the Xbox gaming console. Over the past decade, the application has been repeatedly updated and redesigned.

However, in recent years, interest in Skype has significantly decreased. During the coronavirus pandemic, Microsoft was unable to effectively position the service as a competitive solution, and it faded into the background.

In addition, in 2015, a designer from Russia released a video called "Skype Advertising", which told in a psychedelic manner about the "advantages of Skype as a file sharing service".
