Two new subway stations have been opened in Almaty on April 18, Tengrinews reports.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev along with the Akim (Mayor) of Almaty Akmetzhan Yessimov, well-known Kazakh businessman Kenes Rakishev, Ambassador of Russia Mikhail Bocharnikov and several officials participated in the opening ceremony of the Sairan and Moskva stations. Nazarbayev travelled by subway with Yessimov and got off on the Moskva station to meet the subway construction workers. The workers thanked the President for supporting the construction of the Almaty subway.

Nazarbayev noted the importance of the subway for Almaty. “The city is expanding. The subway decreases the traffic pressure, which is especially convenient for city dwellers during rush hours. The ring road will be completed soon. It will improve the environment. The passenger flow will be increased with these two new stations,” Nazarbayev said.

In 2012, the passenger flow amounted to 15-16 thousand people per day in the subway. In 2014, the passenger flow increased to 24-25 thousand people per day. The new stations are expected to double the passenger flow.

The Moskva station is situated at 11-meter depth under Abay avenue between Otegen Batyr street and Altynsarin avenue. The design of the new station features a vibrant red colour and photography of the Red Square and the Kremlin.

According to the press office of the Akimat (Municipal Authorities), the construction of the metro line will be continued. The metro line will be extended along Abay avenue from Altynsarin avenue towards Yassauy street. The Akimat promised to open the Saryarka and Dostyk stations in the future.

The Almaty Subway opened on December 1, 2011. The subway line initially consisted of seven metro stations: Raimbek Batyr, Zhibek Zholy, Almaly, Abay, Baikonur, Mukhtar Auezov’s Drama Theatre and Alatau.
