Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev became the first passenger of Almaty subway, Tengrinews.kz reports from the opening ceremony of the first subway line. Almaty subway that was under construction since 1988 was launched on December 1. “I remember the beginning of construction. I congratulate all the subway constructors and Almaty residents from the bottom of my heart. It is an exciting historical moment and this is the first subway line in the history of Almaty. Now we have joined the 40 countries that have subways. If you remember, we have funded construction of the subway despite of the economic crisis." "It is cool in summer and warm in winter there. Sefety and security are provided for. Look at this station (Raiymbek station), it is a masterpiece. Construction of Almaty subway will not only decrease the pressure on bus routes, but will also help us develop a new transport tradition. I call the residents of Almaty to keep the subway safe,” the President told Almaty residents. The first phase of the first line includes 7 stations: Raiymbek batyr, Zhibek Zholy, Almaly, Abai, Baikonyr, Mukhtar Auezov theater and Alatau. According to the Department of Passenger Transport and Roads of Almaty, the cost of the first phase made 165.9 billion tenge ($1.1 billion). The officials have calculated that the estimate passengers flow will make around 26 thousand people per day. 7 Hyundai trains with 4 carriages each will cruise Almaty subway. One such train can fit in 940 people. Setting the cost of one trip, Almaty administration considered experience of subways in the neighboring countries. For example, one subway trip in Moscow costs 145 tenge ($1), a trip in Saint-Petersburg costs 140 tenge ($0.95), 75 tenge ($0.5) in Kazan, 70 tenge ($0.48) in Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk and 50 tenge ($0.34) in Tashkent. The cost of one trip in Almaty subway is set at 80 tenge ($0.54). However, net cost of of one passenger's trip (calculated based on 15-percent load) makes 407 tenge ($2.8) in Kazakhstan subway. Construction of the second stage of the first subway line was started in March 2011. The second stage will include 5 stations: Sairan, Moscow, Saryarka, Dostyk, Kalkaman. The first line of subway will be continued in the northern direction from Raiymbek station located at the crossing of Raiymbek and Furmanov streets. The residents will be offered smart-cards that can be charge for 5 to 90 trips, as well as one-use slugs.
