Astana-based plant will produce its first KZ8A electric locomotives in March 2014, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Vice-President of Alstom Holding Bernard Gonne."All the approvals and certification of the first electric locomotive will be completed by 2014. This is the first stage of the operation, when localization is low. First the electric locomotives were made in France, then they were assembled in Astana from kits made in France, then the French-made parts are replaced with those made locally. The first electric locomotives to roll off this particular plant will be produced in March 2014," Gonne said at the 4th International Rail Salon of Engineering and Technologies EXPO 1520 in Moscow.According to President of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) national railway company Askar Manin, KZ8A electric locomotives are currently being tested. The plan is to produce the locomotives both for the domestic market and for export. "We are going to export locomotives to other countries as well as supply the domestic market of Kazakhstan next year. The market has already expressed interest to the product. The localization issue is very important, of course. "We are introducing a new project of locomotive diesel engine production. After the project is be commissioned by the end of 2014 the level of localization will rise. For example, the localization of Evolution locomotive will reach 70%. We are gaining experience in working with the electric locomotives, so the localization will be growing," Mamin said.In 2008 Kazakhstan's rail engineering output made 10 billion tenge ($65 million), where as by the end of 2013 it is expected to be more than 200 billion tenge ($1.3 billion). The output is expected to reach 300 billion tenge ($1.9 billion) by 2015, he said. "It is a modern electric locomotive meeting the innovative requirements, completely computerized and equipped with the latest engineering developments. The two-sectioned KZ8A is able to replace old three-sectioned VL80. This way we will reduce both the operation expenses and the transportation time, because KZ8As can carry up to 9 tons of cargo at a fast speed," President of Locomotive JSC Marat Medeubayev said.Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev launched the electric locomotive plant Elektrovoz Kurastyru Zauitty in Astana in December 2012. The total cost of the project exceeded 18 billion tenge ($117 million). The project will create 650 new jobs. Its founders are Remlokomotiv (a branch company of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy), Alstom Holdings (a French company producing equipment for railroad transport) and TransMashHolding (Russia’s biggest company in transport engineering).By Baurbek Konyrov
