Baikonur cosmodrome will work and develop regardless of Russia's presence, chairman of Kazakhstan National Space Agency Talgat Mussabayev said during online-conference at BNews.kz.

"I'm not an oracle but we are doing everything to make Baikonur live and develop. One of the first steps to keep it working, as many say, is to prolong the rental agreement with Russia under new terms," Mussabayev said. Head of KazCosmos also noted that Baikonur should not go out of order also because Kazakhstan is starting its own work in this direction and spends a fair amount of money on it.

"I don't know how, but maybe it will be rented out to other countries. According to our forecasts, Baikonur has to work and develop. The gravity center will gradually shift to Kazakhstan. Russia plans a new construction of Vostochnyi cosmodrome in Amur oblast. Of course, we think that it will move the majority of its federal launches to Vostochnyi. But these are only forecasts," Mussabayev said. He also notes that the managers of Russian space industry and the country's administration currently state that they are not going to leave Baikonur.

Kazakhstan Government earlier approved the strategic plan for the National Space Agency for 2011-2015 that includes the scenario of Baikonur's functioning in case Russia moves out to Vostochnyi cosmodrome. According to the plan, Baikonur will rely on commercial launches only in this case.
