The unit is equipped with 20 retransmitters, 16 of which are active and 4 are reserve. It weighs 1,330 kg and has to operate in geostationary earth orbit for 12 years, rendering telecommunication services to users in Kazakhstan, Central Asian and central part of Russia.

Initially KazSat-2 was scheduled for a launch in December 2009. It was postponed to the end of 2010 over technical problems. Later the lauch was rescheduled to July 10, but it was delayed again.
