Tengrinews.kz - The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued a warning about fraudulent messages being sent under the guise of bank employees.
The bank reported an increase in scam attempts targeting Kazakh citizens. Fraudsters have been sending fake documents using the official letterhead of the National Bank.
"Scammers are sending counterfeit letters claiming to be from the National Bank, informing recipients that they have fallen victim to fraud. The scammers then demand money transfers under the pretense of 'safely returning funds' or covering 'associated financial obligations for clearing procedures'," the statement read.
The National Bank reminded citizens that it does not service personal accounts, provide insurance for personal funds, or conduct financial transactions with the general public.
"These fraudulent messages are being distributed via WhatsApp, email, and social media," the bank clarified.
The National Bank urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid transferring money to suspicious accounts, and not to trust unverified messages or documents.
"Such schemes may involve people posing as 'law enforcement officers' or 'employees of the National Bank of Kazakhstan' under the pretext of 'securing transfers against fraud,' 'catching fraudsters' at financial institutions, 'conducting operational inspections by special authorities,' or participating in joint 'special operations' with state bodies of Kazakhstan," the bank added.
The National Bank advises anyone who encounters such scams to report them to law enforcement. For consultations, citizens can contact the National Bank's call center at 1477.
