Kazakhstan to allocate $61.2 million to finance Majilis elections in 2012

Kazakhstan will allocate $61.2 million to finance Majilis (lower chamber) elections in 2012, Finance Minister Bolat Zhamishev announced September 12 when presenting the 2012-2014 draft budget. The state doesn’t have sufficient financial resources for early elections to the nation's Majilis (lower chamber), Chairman of the Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) Kuandyk Turgankulov had announced July 7. “Elections to the Majilis and maslikhats [local representative bodies] will be held in 2012, as there is no money earmarked this year”, he said at the time. In April Ermukhamet Ertysbayev, advisor to the President, told Kazakhstan might run early Parliament elections. However, President Nazarbayev refuted the speculation, saying that elections to the country’s Majilis would be held in 2012.
