EXPO-2017 that will take in Astana from June 10 to September 10, 2017 is expected to bring more than 280 million euro in profit to Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports citing Chairman of Astana EXPO-2017 national company that runs preparations for EXPO-2017 Talgat Yermegiyayev.

“The (expected) revenue that we submitted in the registration dossier exceeded 280 million euro. This is our business plan. This is the profit we will have from the sponsors, ticket sales, our commercial activities. I think we will make these 283 million euro,” Talgat Yermegiyaev said when reporting on the course of preparations to the EXPO-2017 at an extended meeting of the Majilis Committee for Environment and Nature.

As practice shows, no matter how successful an event is, one of the main tasks is to address the issue on further exploitation of EXPO facilities after the exhibition, he said. In this regard, Kazakhstan is exploring the experience of the Chinese city of Shanghai and German city of Hannover that hosted EXPOs in 2010 and 2000.

“Some of the venues are used as tourist sites, centers of cultural exchange, research bases, offices and business centers, residential complexes, leisure and entertainment facilities. However, in most cases, these facilities are no longer in use. Many venues constructed for the exhibition were abandoned, some have been just demolished except for a few of them. Therefore, given the experience of these countries, I can say that for the venues to be successfully put to use after the exhibition we need to develop a carefully thought-out strategy, to take a comprehensive approach to the exhibition's legacy as a combination of material, cultural, technological, communication and information aspects,” Talgat Yermegiyayev said.

According to him, Astana city aims to create a "self-sufficient" urban area incorporating R&D, technological and cultural facilities surrounded by open spaces and residential complexes, trade, leisure and business facilities. “At the designing stage we are provisioning for a technical possibility to later installing additional intermediate floors into the exhibition's venues so that they can be rationally used after the exhibition. The design includes everything, even restrooms, stair flights and partitioning walls. We are also considering proposals of government agencies in regards to the desired amounts of space. We will take all necessary measures to effectively use every meter of the constructed facilities,” Talgat Yermegiyayev concluded.

The EXPO-2017 will take place in Astana from June 10 to September 10. Astana expects participants from over 100 countries, 10 international organizations and leading companies in innovative technologies. The city will host over 3000 cultural events during the exhibition.
