Tengrinews.kz - Finnish authorities have reported damage to a fiber-optic cable connecting Finland and Sweden, causing widespread internet disruptions in Finland, according to DW.

Two ground-line damages have been identified, which significantly impacted the internet infrastructure in Finland. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of sabotage.

Telecommunications operator GlobalConnect stated that the damage affected critical infrastructure. However, one segment has already been repaired, and undersea cables remain unaffected.

Finland's Minister of Transport and Communications, Lulu Ranne, shared on X (formerly Twitter) that an investigation is underway and assured that authorities are treating the incident seriously.

This follows similar incidents in mid-November when undersea internet cables between Germany and Finland, as well as Sweden and Lithuania, were damaged. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at the time suggested that sabotage might have been involved.

Swedish authorities are also investigating the recent incident, with the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 under scrutiny as it was reportedly in the vicinity of the damage.
