Tengrinews.kz – Denmark will deliver its final paper letter at the end of December, marking the end of an era as the country prepares to dismantle its remaining public mailboxes in 2025. As DW reports, letter volumes in Denmark have dropped by nearly 90 percent since 2000.

NordPost, the national postal operator, says it will now focus on parcel delivery to keep pace with domestic competitors. While Danes will still be able to send paper letters or postcards, they will have to do so through private companies.

Denmark is the first country in Europe to make such a shift, though declining letter volumes are a trend seen across the continent. Experts note that postal services worldwide are being forced to adapt as digital communication continues to expand.

Kazakhstan has already taken similar steps. Earlier this year, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law updating postal regulations, which eliminates the concept of a traditional mailbox and expands postal operators’ capabilities. The new rules allow postal workers to hand over deliveries to third parties using PIN-code verification and grant operators the right to transport and store medicines and medical products in line with national requirements.
