Tengrinews.kz - Romania and Bulgaria will become full members of the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025, opening new opportunities for travel, trade, and tourism across Europe.

The decision, made by the Council of the European Union and approved by the European Commission, means that internal border controls between Romania, Bulgaria, and other Schengen countries will be abolished starting in 2025. Residents of these nations will then be able to travel across the Schengen Area without facing additional checks at land borders.

The integration process began in 2023. Internal air and sea border controls were lifted in December 2023, followed by the implementation of new Schengen visa issuance rules on March 31, 2024. Both countries have since been operating under Schengen standards, ensuring security and streamlined processes for citizens and travelers.

Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area marks a significant step toward greater unity within the European Union.

"Today is a day of joy for all Bulgarians, Romanians, and our entire Union," stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

She emphasized that joining Schengen will enhance Romania and Bulgaria’s economic and cultural ties with other EU states. The removal of border barriers will provide safer and more convenient travel for citizens, tourists, and entrepreneurs, boosting economic growth and regional trade.

The Schengen Area, home to nearly 450 million people, remains the most visited region globally. According to the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Romania and Bulgaria’s inclusion will not only strengthen regional security but also enhance the area's global significance.
