Wolves like in the movies: stunning footage captured in the mountains of Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz – Two wolves were captured on a camera trap installed in the Kolsai Lakes National Park.

The footage, showing two wolves freely roaming through the forest, was recorded on April 23 using a special device set up as part of a wildlife monitoring program.

The animals appear graceful and confident — the scene resembles a moment from a wildlife documentary. One of the predators, upon noticing the camera, became alert, stared directly into the lens, and quickly backed away — as if sensing it was being watched.

There are four subspecies of wolves inhabiting Kazakhstan. One of them is the Tibetan wolf (Canis lupus chanco), found in the mountains of the south and southeast of the country, including the Kungey Alatau area.

Tibetan wolves typically weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms, with males being significantly larger than females. They are characterized by a large head, broad forehead, elongated snout, and powerful jaws. The ears are small, triangular, and pointed, while the tail is long and bushy. Their claws are blunt and, unlike cats, non-retractable.

Their fur is light gray, sometimes with a reddish tint. In winter, their coat becomes especially thick and dense. A distinctive dark stripe runs along the back — one of the subspecies' identifying features.
