Turgen's Oykaragay plateau situated in Almaty Oblast 100 kilometers from Almaty city is an ideal place for construction of a world-class ski resort. Famous constructor Boris Yaglinsky, an ardent supporter of Almaty region sport and tourist infrastructure development, said this in his interview to Megapolis.kz newspaper. He said that foreign experts, who investigated huge areas of Zailiysky Alatau (a mountain range in North-Western Tian Shan extending for 360 km (on the border of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) at the end of the 80s of the 20th century, chose the upland that is situated in interfluve area of the Turgen River and Kayrak River. “This is a huge high-altitude cirque with an elevation of 1500 meters and the total area of 5000 hectares that may be used for routing skiing pistes,” Yaglinskiy said about Turgen slopes. “Hundred of pistes, starting from the beginners level and up to the most advanced could be developed there. It is possible to route more than ten world-class pistes for speed skiing, most prestigious and challenging Alpine skiing sport event.” The expert added that one of the pistes characteristics (4000-meter long, with 1097 meters elevation) go beyond the characteristics of the most popular European Ski Resorts, such as Kitzbuhel (Austria), Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) and Bormio (Italy). Oykaragay upland meets all the necessary requirements for construction of an international ski resort, including picturesque landscape, abundance of water, and good conditions for construction of plate sports and entertainment facilities. According to Yaglinskiy, foreign experts rejected Southern mountainous suburbs of Almaty: Kok-Zhailau, Kimassar, Butakovka and Big Almaty Lake when looking for a suitable place for construction and explained that there were no environmental conditions for speed skiing pistes routing. Тhe Turgen Gorge is situated in the Ile Alatau National Park (90 km from Almaty) The gorge has hot springs, а trout farm, waterfalls and lots of woods. Rich in coniferous and mixed forests, alpine and sub-alpine meadows, lakes and springs, medicinal herbs and berries, the gorge plunges 44 km to the vast Assy plateau.
