Tengrinews.kz – A rare animal listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book was filmed by locals in the Ile-Alatau National Park. A Turkestan lynx (Lynx lynx isabellinus) was recorded from approximately ten meters away on a smartphone.
The video was shared on the park’s Instagram account.
"A rare predator — the Turkestan lynx — was captured in the park. Inspectors from the Aksai branch recorded this Red Book species during a patrol," the post reads.
Previously, such close sightings of the lynx were only possible using camera traps.

Details from the national park
The lynx was filmed on September 27. In the evening, specialists driving along a mountain road noticed a dark moving figure. Approaching closer, they identified it as the Turkestan lynx, a rare and monitored species. The team cautiously closed the distance to about ten meters, with the lynx observing them from behind a rock.
"This mutual observation lasted 2–3 minutes. However, the inspectors did not leave the vehicle to continue on foot — after all, it was a wild predator. Encounters with lynxes have occurred here before, but capturing such clear footage from this close is extremely rare," the park noted.
According to the latest data, 49 Turkestan lynxes have been recorded in the national park.
