It is the first time snow leopards are caught on a surveillance camera in Kazakhstan’s Kolsay Kolderi National Park. A family of three - a female with two grown offsprings - were been recorded by a camera at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level in the gorge called Small Uryukty, a conservation area. One of the leopards approached the camera and even looked into it and started sniffing the “strange” object.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Kazakhstan, there are traces of snow leopards in other gorges in the National Park.

The species is included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under the category endangered.
The leopard has a symbolic meaning for Turkic people. It became the official symbol of Kazakhstan and can be found on the emblem of Almaty city.
