Tengrinews.kz — Kazakh photographer Dmitry Dotsenko has captured a comet flying in the sky over Astana.

Dotsenko posted the photos on his Instagram page.

"I bid the Zijinshan comet a good journey. I went further away from the city light pollution to take a few photos. Its brightness is fading every day and it is flying away from us, most likely forever. According to astronomers, the comet will not return to the solar system. Such bright comets are quite rare, they happen once every 5-10 years. Therefore, I do not miss the opportunity and take photos," he noted.

There are many comments under the video, users noted that the author continues to surprise and create interesting content.

"Thank you for such historical photos, and we, at least through the screen, also saw this comet", "Something suddenly makes me sad, here and now, something is slipping away", "And we still haven't seen either the 'second moon', or the 'northern lights' over the city, or the comet," people wrote in the comments.

Dmitry Dotsenko told us when he took these photos. It turned out that it was on October 17, but he decided to publish them only now. As you know, the photographer lives in Almaty, but on business he ended up in Astana and decided to take advantage of the moment and photographed the comet.

"I took the pictures in the steppe, about 50 kilometers from the city along the Korgzhyn highway. I took these pictures on October 17. The comet is still visible now, you can find it in the dark sky away from light pollution with the help of binoculars or a camera. I took the pictures with a camera. I didn't come to Astana for the sake of the comet, but I took advantage of the moment," he noted.

The photographer also emphasized that those who want to see the comet can still take advantage of the chance.

"If you go far from the city in good weather, you can still see it with binoculars or a camera. But it is losing brightness every day," he added.

According to some experts, the comet can be seen before the end of October. However, earlier, Svetlana Moshkina, a specialist at the Astrophysical Institute, noted that, according to her data, the approximate time for visual observations was from October 12 to 18.

"On September 27, comet C/2023 A3 Zijinshan-ATLAS passed perihelion, approaching the Sun at a distance of 0.39 astronomical units (about 58 million kilometers). On October 12, it will be closest to our planet at a distance of 0.48 astronomical units (about 70 million kilometers). As the comet moves away from Earth, its brightness will rapidly decrease. Around October 11-12, it will appear above the horizon in the northern hemisphere after sunset, the approximate time for visual observations is from October 12 to 18, after which the comet can only be seen through a telescope," she said then.

Earlier, Dmitry Dotsenko captured a breathtaking view of the largest supermoon of the year.
