Astana administration undertakes to lower greenhouse gas emissions

Kazakhstan's Astanah as officially joined the Covenant of Mayors in Brussels, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Astana administration. According to the press-service, deputy Akim (Mayor) of Astana Vassiliy Krylov officially testified to the Kazakhstan capital’s intention to join the European initiative by signing it. “Astana administration undertakes to performed tasks set by the European Union to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent by 2020. Besides, the administration will have to work out a plan of actions on sustainable energy within a year. It will include cataloguing the basic emissions and development of an action plan and a schedule of its implementation by the accountable authorities,” the message states. The European Commission will support Astana in development of energy management, drafting of the action plan on sustainable energy development and creation of a network of energy managers. The Covenant of Mayors agreement was signed by over 4,800 cities in the world, the press-service writes. The initiative has attracted over 2 billion Euro in investments for activities on improvement of energy efficiency of the cities. Kazakhstan had undertook the obligations to decrease the hazardous emissions. Kazakhstan Minister of Environmental protection Nurlan Kapparov said that according to the Kyoto protocol, Kazakhstan had to lower its greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent by 2020 and by 20 percent by 2050.
