80% of air pollution falls on private vehicles in Almaty, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) press-service.

The experts have calculated that transport emission of greenhouse gases made up 2.18 million tons of CO2 equivalent a year in Almaty as of the end of 2011. Private transport generates 77% of the greenhouse gases, public transport (buses) generate another 22% and electric public transport (Subway, tramways, trolleybuses) – 1%. Should more Almaty citizens use public transport instead of their private car the emissions could be reduced ten-fold.

This data will be used by the international experts to develop an Almaty transport strategy in the framework of the Sustainable Transport (Green Transport) of Almaty project.

A training was held on May 29 in the framework of the project implemented by the UNDP and Sustainable Transport of Almaty Foundation together with Almaty Akimat (Municipal Authorities of Almaty). The training was participated by representatives of the municipal authorities, Kazgidromet (Kazakhstan Meteorological Center) and transport experts who gathered to evaluate the transport-generated green house gas' emissions based on the Global Environment Facility (GEF) evaluation methods. The goal of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through introduction of a sustainable transport system. One of the projects top priorities is to increase the use of public transport by 20% by 2016.
