Tengrinews.kz – Motion-sensor cameras in Altyn-Emel National Park (Zhetysu) have captured a herd of goitered gazelles, a rare species listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book.

The footage shows several gazelles approaching an artificial watering hole installed to support the population during dry seasons.

“These materials help specialists study the gazelles’ habitat, activity, and population numbers. The data forms the basis for conservation measures and planning regular monitoring,” the national park noted.

As of 2025, Altyn-Emel is home to 5,452 gazelles spread across its 307,000-hectare protected territory. While the population is considered relatively stable, experts warn that the species remains vulnerable due to poaching, climate change, and shrinking natural pastures.

The gazelle is a symbol of Kazakhstan’s steppes and serves as an indicator of ecosystem health. Scientists stress that the species’ disappearance would disrupt the natural balance.

Environmental experts highlight the importance of camera-trap footage for monitoring trends and developing effective protection strategies.

Park authorities also remind tourists and locals to follow conservation rules:

  • avoid approaching herds,
  • keep noise to a minimum and refrain from littering,
  • report poaching to environmental authorities.
