Kazakhstan’s biosphere reserve Alakol lake has been entered into the global network of biosphere reservations, KazTAG reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry.

“The 25th session of the international coordination council of UNESCO's The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program was held in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on May 27-30. 12 new sites were added to the global network of biosphere reservations,” the message states.

MAB council unilaterally voted for including Kazakhstan’s biosphere reserve Alakol lake into the global network of biosphere reserves. UNESCO's international experts said that adding Alakol biosphere reserve to the global network would promote retention of the region’s unique nature, as well as development of Kazakhstan’s economy and its tourist potential.

During the MAB meeting Kazakhstan’s permanent representative office in UNESCO organized a photo exhibition and presentation of 10 potential biosphere reserves from different Kazakhstan regions that could be selected for the UNESCO global network in the nearest time.

The presentation was attended by UNESCO management and representatives of MAB member-countries.

Meanwhile, MAB also approved applications from India, Spain, Italy, China, South Korea, France and Ecuador.

According to Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry, UNESCO accepted the first application from Kazakhstan -- Korgalzhynsk state natural reservation -- in 2012. “This makes Alakol the second globally acknowledged reserve at the territory of Kazakhstan,” the message states.

According to the Ministry, the global network of biosphere reservations currently includes 621 sites in 118 countries.
