A skier has died after smashing into another skier at the Aziada Route of Shymbulak ski resort in the mountains near Almaty, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Operations Manager of Chimbulak Development JSC Igor Gayanov. The incident happened at 01:00 p.m. One of the rescuers witnessed the crash. Neither of the skiers was wearing a safety hardhat. According to Gayanov the resort’s employees have no right not restrict the resort's clients from accessing snow slopes without hardhats. Both skiers - a 57 y.o. man and a 30 y.o. man - were delivered to the medical station by the resort’s rescuers at 01:23 p.m. The doctors started providing medical aid to the victims immediately. Two mobile intensive care units arrived at 01:45 p.m. The intensive care doctors also started saving the skiers. But the 57-y.o. man died 15 minutes after arrival of the doctors. He had closed fractures of one leg, one hand and ribs and an open basal skull fracture from the right side. Gayanov says that the victim would have had more chanced to survive if he was wearing the required safety outfits, because the basal skull fracture is considered the main cause of his death. The second skier was taken to the hospital No.7 of Almaty with a brain concussion. Police officers arrived at the accident site. The investigation is currently in process. “The skis of the person who died are completely destroyed and the poles are badly bent in several places. They were 25-30 meters apart from each other. The collision was quite strong,” Gayanov says. “The most terrible is that he had to hardhat on.” According to Gayanov, Shymbulak’s tracks allow skiers to reach the speed of over 100 km/h. He pointed out that overly fast skiers risk losing their passes after the second warning. By Alisher Akhmetov
