Tengrinews.kz – The Department for Emergency Situations (DES) in Almaty has issued an urgent weather warning, advising residents to take precautions as the city braces for a sharp drop in temperature and icy conditions.
According to the agency, rainfall is expected to turn into snow overnight on November 5, with temperatures falling and black ice forming on the roads. The weather is forecast to worsen around 03:00 a.m.
“Visitors and tourists are strongly advised to avoid hiking in the mountains. Do not postpone returning home until late evening — worsening weather conditions may make it difficult to find your way back,” the DES said in a statement.
Residents are also urged to:
- Avoid parking vehicles under trees;
- Stay away from poorly secured structures that may collapse;
- Pedestrians should exercise extra caution, as visibility decreases during rainfall.
- Safety tips during cold weather
The DES also reminded residents to ensure heating and electrical systems are functioning safely:
- Check chimneys and ventilation systems to prevent carbon monoxide leaks;
- Avoid overloading electrical networks by using multiple high-powered appliances at once.
- Authorities ask citizens to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates closely.
