Derailing a wheelpair has been named the preliminary cause of the accident with Astana-Almaty train, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the President for Production of Passazhirskiye Perevozki company (a passenger transportation branch of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy national railway company) Talgat Lessov. “One wheelpair in the first technical wagon has got derailed. That’s why the train stopped. Automatic security system got activated because of the technical failure in the wagon. This failure was eliminated at 1:00 p.m. The instruction was issued to check and identify the extent at which this train could continue operating and continue to the destination by measuring all the technical parameters of the train car. A special commission will define and made the final statement on the exact reasons of the failure within three days,” Talgat Lessov said. According to Lessov, the train was traveling at low speed because of the storm warning and strong wind of over 30m/sec. “That’s why the train was traveling at not more than 25 km/hour,” he said. And that’s why it took the additional train so long to get to the accident site. Passazhirskiye Perevozki informed of the readiness to pay the passengers the compensation in the amount of 3 percent of the ticket cost for each day of the train’s delay upon arrival to Almaty-2 station, as stipulated in the Kazakhstan Law On Railroad Transport. Also, according to the rules of transportation of passengers, luggage and cargoes by railroad transport in Kazakhstan, the passengers will get compensated for having to travel in the train cars of lower category from Berlik-1 to Almaty-2 station. “For this purpose the company has organized the work of two booking offices at Almaty-2 station where the passengers will be able to get their compensation. The passengers, who forgo the opportunity to get compensated at the arrival station, may get their money using the complaint procedure,” Lessov said. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that the accident happened on April 23 at 04:20 a.m. Another train arrived to pick up the passengers of Talgo train that ran off the tracks only after 9 hours. The restaurant wagon was empty and there was nothing to eat. The passengers started to panic. According to Zhambyl oblast Emergency Situations Department, no casualties were reported.
