The main goal is to base education on comprehension rather than on memorizing new material. The idea is that school children will be taught to understand new material though practice and critical thinking.
The new educational system will be introduced in a test mode in a number of schools in 2015, the Minister of Education Aslan Sarinzhipov said. 30 to 40 school throughout the country will take part in the pilot project.
The new system has a new curriculum and improved textbooks. Introduction of the new curriculum into the education system country-wide is scheduled for 2016.
In addition to the curriculum, grading system will be changed as well.
The Minister added that these changes would affect the college admission exam - the Single National Testing. According to Sarinzhipov, lowering stress during the exams was one of the main goals of the education reform.
Kazakhstan is starting its transition from the current 11-year to 12-year education in 2015 and plans to fully switch to the new system by 2020. The new education system will be based on 5+5+2 method where a child studies from the 1st to the 5th grade in a primary school, from the 6th to the 10th grade in a secondary school and from the 11th to 12th grade in a high school.
It is also expected that with introduction of the 12-year education, the grading system will change from the current 5-point to a 10-point grading system.
