The International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad is a competition in chemistry that is held each year in the end of April or early May among schoolchildren of a number of the CIS (post-Soviet space) countries, Baltic states, and countries of South-East Europe. The Mendeleev Olympiad is a successor of the All-Union Olympiad in Chemistry and carries on its traditions and numeration. The Olympiad was named after the Great Russian chemist Dmitriy Mendeleev.
Participants in the Olympiad are schoolchildren of graduation and pre-graduation classes who won national Olympiads in chemistry in their countries. The number of participants from each of the participating countries is established by a quota. The host country is allowed to have the largest team.
The main languages of the Mendeleev Olympiad are Russian and English. But the teams can also get translations of tasks into their national languages.
Kazakhstan’s team has been participating in the Mendeleev Olympiad since 1998.
This year, 118 students from 17 countries participated in the Olympiad. The 2014 Olympiad was supposed to be held in Kiev, however due to escalation of the situation in Ukraine, the Olympiad was held in Moscow State University.
The next year's competition will be held in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.
