Improving the status of a teacher should not be limited to just raising salaries, Director of the National Institute of Skill Development for teachers and administrative staff in education Gulnas Akhmetova thinks, Tengrinews.kz reports. “It is important to stimulate teachers intellectually, help them develop professionally and personally. These components are more crucial than the size of a teacher’s salary,” Akhmetova remarked at the round-table “Role of professional development in formation of teacher’s status.” In her opinion, if a teacher knows less than a pupil or a parent, that would spoil his/her professional reputation. “Children respect teachers only for their knowledge and personal traits,” Director of the National Institute of Skill Development believes. Akhmetova also told that in the short term a national center of teachers’ training will be in place. Additionally, the institute, at present employing 159 people, has recently received two new buildings in the center of Almaty. “And today on behalf of all the teachers in Kazakhstan I would like to express my gratitude to the President of our country Nursultan Nazarbayev for this gift. We plan to move in by the end of 2011,” she said.
