The institute reports that the volcano's activity poses a threat to local air traffic.
"The Shiveluch volcano is currently erupting, with the '300 Years of RAS' dome continuing its activity," the institute stated on its Telegram channel.
They added that lava is currently being expelled. The volcano is located about 50 kilometers from the village of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsky district and 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Earlier, a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka. Shortly after the tremors, the Shiveluch volcano erupted, spewing ash up to eight kilometers into the sky.
