Nazarbayev to attend "Chernobyl events"

Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev will go to Kiev to take part in the events devoted to the 25th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports. On April 18 Emergency Department of Ukraine organizes a press-tour to Chernobyl exclusion and evacuation zones. Representatives of countries that donated money to fund Chernobyl projects will assemble for a conference the next day. An international conference called 25th anniversary of Chernobyl catastrophe. Safety of the future is scheduled to take place on April 20-22. Presidents of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus are expected to have a three-lateral meeting on anniversary date, April 26. “Chernobyl events” in Kiev will also be visited by presidents of several other countries: Bronislav Komorowski (Poland), Ivo Josipović (Croatia), Micheline Calmy-Rey (Switzerland) and Pál Schmitt (Hungary). Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland, head of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Yukiya Amano, president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and chairman of EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) Tomas Mirov have also confirmed their participation. A total of 50 foreign delegations of different levels are expected to attend the events. April 26, 2011 will be day of the 25th anniversary of one of the most devastating industrial catastrophes at Chernobyl Ukrainian nuclear power station. At night of April 26, 1986 the power plant’s reactor in the fourth power unit was crippled after a series of thermal explosions. The environment suffered a devastating radioactive contamination with substantial amounts radioactive isotopes of uranium, plutonium, iodine-131, cesium-134, cesium-137 and strontium-90 discharged into the surroundings from the ruptured reactor. Chernobyl nuclear plant is located close to Pripyat town, 18 kilometers from Chernobyl town, 16 kilometers from Belarus border and 110 kilometers from Kiev.
