Tengrinews.kz - A Reddit discussion is taking tourists to share the dishes they've fallen in love with while abroad and can't stop eating — from Brazilain berries to a "green cake" that's changed travelers' diets forever, according to the Daily Mail.
"A smorgasbord of replies" followed, and users have tagged countries such as Brazil, Japan, USA, Singapore and Balkans.
Acai, Brazil
The small purple berries from South American palm trees, acai, have become a favorite of many travelers. The word is pronounced "ah-sigh-ee." Often served in smoothie bowls, acai is known for its unique, rich flavor. Reddit user Coffeewalnut05, who spent time in Brazil, says they prefer acai in its purest form as pulp or puree, something not easily found outside Brazil.
"For me, it’s acai from my time in Brazil. The classic acai ice-cream with granola and banana is a favourite, but I prefer acai in its more “pure” form as a pulp or puree, so I still order that sometimes to have it at home. Sadly, in my country, it’s not common to find acai sold like that in shops, and acai bowls are only a thing in specific places like London and some coastal areas," wrote Coffeewalnut05.
Onigiri, Japan
You may have seen this rice triangle in anime before. A beloved snack in Japan, onigiri are rice balls often stuffed with fillings like salmon or pickled plum and wrapped in seaweed. Reddit user Melonpan78 discovered these rice triangles during a trip to Japan and now makes them regularly at home.
"Discovered them in Japan, make them myself at least once a week. I usually put spicy chicken or salmon mayo inside," said Melonpan78.
Another user agrees.
"Same! Every time I go to the Japanese market near me, I get a pickled plum onigiri and tuna mayo!" shared Kikicataku.
Buffalo wings, USA
This is a traditional American snack. Chicken wings are deep fried and dipped in a hot sauce. One traveler said he "fell in love with buffalo wings" when he was in New York State. User Rude-Illustrator-884 said he grew up in the Middle East and had never had them before, but the first time he tried them, he loved the taste.
"We stopped by Buffalo, New York, during a trip from NYC to Niagara Falls and we got some wings from there because my parents wanted me to try it since we were in Buffalo. I fell in love with buffalo wings. When my grandma came to visit us in the US from Vietnam, buffalo wings became her favorite thing too."
Pandan cake, Singapore
This cake, which is made from Pandanus amaryllifolius leaves, has a very unique and grassy-vanilla flavor. One user fell in love with the grassy taste of the tropical pandan plant while in Singapore and is now making pandan cake. According to Reddit user Another-story, he bought four bottles of the extract the last time he was in Singapore. He added that he will be moving to a new apartment soon and pandan cake will be the first thing he bakes to celebrate.
Ajvar, Balkans
Ajvar is a red pepper paste that is popular in the Balkans and “hits perfectly,” according to some Reddit users. Schnitzalbrain described the paste’s taste as “i’s like a roasted pepper and vegetable sauce.”
