Tengrinews.kz – The Prosecutor General’s Office is checking the Epstein files for the possible presence of Kazakhstan citizens. This was reported by Deputy Prosecutor General Yerlan Utegenov on the sidelines of the Senate.
According to Yerlan Utegenov, the review of the Epstein files is ongoing. The volume of data is large — more than 3 million messages.
“They are fragmented and incomplete. We are now fully studying them to determine whether Kazakhstan citizens are mentioned and where Kazakhstan is discussed in general,” Utegenov said.
Context
On January 31, the U.S. Department of Justice published a massive amount of materials related to the Jeffrey Epstein case — more than 3 million pages, 180,000 photographs, and 2,000 videos.
This is the largest publication since the transparency law related to this case was adopted.
What the Epstein files are
The “Epstein files” are a large collection of documents related to the case of American financier Jeffrey Epstein. They include court materials, witness testimonies, and contact lists. Epstein was accused of running a network for the sexual exploitation of minors.
Hundreds of well-known people are mentioned in these materials — politicians, businessmen, scientists, and celebrities. Many of them visited Epstein’s island or flew on his plane. However, it is important to understand that being mentioned in the documents does not mean a person committed a crime.
The publication of these materials showed how closely Epstein was connected with influential people, which is believed to have helped him avoid serious consequences for a long time.
Who was mentioned in the files
The published documents mention former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov eight times. His deputy Kairat Kelimbetov is mentioned more than 90 times (some messages are duplicated).
In a letter dated August 4, 2011, an unidentified person wrote to Epstein:
“Jeffrey, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov lives in the house next to mine. Do you know him?”
In correspondence from 2014, Epstein’s associates reported to him at least three times that they had passed greetings to Massimov.
Earlier, Majilis deputy Askhat Rakhimzhanov sent a parliamentary inquiry to the Prosecutor General and the Chairman of the National Security Committee requesting verification of information about possible contacts between high-ranking Kazakhstan officials and Jeffrey Epstein.
