“Money was transferred by emojis in the chat“: Kazakhs were cheated out of millions of tenge

A 47-year-old woman from Pavlodar, who had no home or regular source of income, decided to enrich herself at the expense of others. Together with her 34-year-old acquaintance, also from Pavlodar, they created a chat group on WhatsApp.
"One of the women simulated working at night on an internet platform, while the other welcomed group members with an emoji with the word "start", signaling the beginning of money transfers to subscriber numbers linked to the scammers' bank cards," the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
To attract new participants, the scammers offered "profitable investments" on the internet platform. They promised "investors" a return on their investment with a 20-30 percent profit within seven days: investments had to be started by the "start" smiley and concluded with the "stop" smiley.
A few months ago, participants in the group transferred amounts ranging from 10,000 to 500,000 tenge to the scammers.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the victims of the fraudsters were 20 citizens living in various cities across the country, who collectively transferred them a total of 90 million tenge to them.
The women were arrested, found guilty of fraud, and sentenced to five years in prison.
"The convicted individuals have arrived at the women's colony in the Abai region, are compensating the victims, complying with the regime and discipline, and participating in educational and community activities," reported Svetlana Golikova, the head of the department.
Earlier, a man from Shymkent has been arrested in Almaty Region for allegedly deceiving trusting citizens out of millions of tenge by claiming to collect funds for children's medical treatments.
